Impossible Ryley!

Update on last nights post from the Radiology scan. The results came back this a.m. with a negative for an embolism… this is good news. However, Ryley still remains at the highest setting of ventilator support unable to be weaned off the ventilator. What they now believe is the onset ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) They have the ventilator set to higher than typical pressures to expand open the smallest part of his lungs where the oxygen/CO2 transfer takes place. They have continued to administer Albuterol to help loosen his secretions and has continued the antibiotics to fight any additional infections that can’t be seen. His temperature remains low but his white blood count is still elevated.

Ryley is unable to get the surgery he needs until he can be weaned off the ventilator to a lower setting. This is for his safety to handle the anesthesia and should anything happen while in surgery. This is somewhat of a double-edged sword because once he gets the surgery they can be more aggressive with teaching Ryley how to cough again and conduct more typical respiratory clearance techniques to prevent full respiratory failure. But the surgeons won’t do the surgery until his lungs clear and can wean off the vent… very frustrating and upsetting. I know it’s the right decision should anything bad in OR yet frustrating still as the alternative is not good either. It’s choosing between two bad options.

Ryley remains in a fair amount of pain as well and continues his drip pain medication via his IV line. He is getting tremendous care here at Duke and I trust the direction we are going. I just wish we were able to get the surgery to move forward one step further in this long process.

Kim and I find hope in a book that was given to us earlier this week..Devotions for Everyday of the Year. Here is todays – Hope is a golden cord connecting you to heaven. This cord helps you hold your head up high, even when multiple trials are buffeting you. I never leave your side and I never let go of your hand. VERY appropriate for the next few days as we understand why Ryley’s lungs are not working well.

PRAY for Ryley to strengthen his lungs and be weaned off the ventilator.

PRAY for Ryley to eradicate any remaining infection

I love you all keep those prayers coming he needs them more than ever!
